Needless to say we are more than ready to move in.

The last of the flooring went in today with carpet on the stairs and in the downstairs bedrooms. The plumbers have been in to install fixtures, tub, sinks, and toilets. Comcast was in to hook up the cable, phone, and Internet.

Since my last post, we've also had the counter tops installed, as well as most of the lighting. Some of our light fixtures are on back order. We also had our stairs, sidewalk and back porch concrete done.
We are getting pretty close to completion now. We still have flooring to get down, which was delayed due to additional leveling that was required. We're hoping some of it might start getting installed tomorrow. The tile floor in the master bathroom is pretty much done. Work is underway on tiling the shower. Appliances have arrived. Granite countertops have been templated and should be ready soon.

The exterior paint was completed while we were away. We ended up choosing a blue on tan look. Specifically, it's Philipsburg Blue on the shingles, and Crown Point Sand on the siding.

I'll have more extensive pictures up tomorrow.

We've seen continual progress over the past week. The siding is almost done, and looks great. Drywall has reached the taping phase, and our kitchen and bathroom cabinets are on site. On the wildlife front, a deer has been sleeping in the garage, and that pesky beaver has returned to do some nasty damage to a couple of our apple trees. Yes, I should have wrapped them in chicken wire sooner.

By request, I've included some before and after shots in this post, so you can see the changes without having to go back through old material.
Insulation went in last week, and drywall started going up today. The siding on the south side of the house is nearing completion as well, which just leaves the front of the house to go.
We've driven all over town trying to find inspiration from other houses. There are quite a few that we like, but we haven't found anything that jumped out at us as being a clear winner. We tried a few of the online painting programs, but without a picture of of the front of our house with the siding and trim on, we've had to just play around with pictures of sample houses that are sort of similar.

Yesterday, we put together some color combinations on the Benjamin-Moore site, and we're posting these samples for your consideration. We welcome your comments and suggestions, however I'll tell you we're leaning toward the beige and green, or the slightly darker, tan and green.
We have new doors now on the front and back of the house. We will also have French pocket doors separating the front living room and the family room area, and the housing for those was installed today. There's also a pocket door in the upstairs bathroom, and that housing is in as well.
All the windows are in, except for the master bedroom. Siding has started to go on. Plumbing is underway. The furnace, and a lot of new duct work is in. The old fireplace has been removed, and most of the interior walls are framed in, except for pocket doors between the front living room and the family room area. Electrical is underway too, with switch boxes, outlets, and light boxes being placed.

Now we find ourselves immersed in details. We're still working on picking a suitable wood, or engineered floor for the downstairs. There are a ton of choices to make in the electrical plan in terms of placement of lights, outlets, and switches. How many hose bibs do we want outside, and where do we want them? We've spent so much time working on big picture issues, that these little details seem so trivial in comparison. Yet, they all have to be addressed in a timely manner to keep things moving along.
Yesterday was jam packed with picking out cabinets, counter tops, and all of the flooring for the house. This was complicated by our daughter being less than patient with how much time this took. In the end we didn't quite reach final decisions on everything, but we're close.

This morning I had a meeting with the electricians to go over the lighting and wiring plan for the house, and I think we've got that more or less squared away.

On the job site, the past few days have seen a lot more of the necessary, but not so visually spectacular kind of work going on. Ceiling joists have been connected to a new beam in the attic, and the floors have been leveled downstairs. But this morning, the vapor barrier went down in the crawl space, and the floor joists were covered with new plywood. Then, this afternoon, window installation began.
I thought the cement truck would be really exciting to Fiona, but she was more interested in the lawn tractor at the ball field across the street. Well, the cement truck was exciting to me at least.
It appears the heating contractor was also on site today, as the old furnace is now sitting in the front room, and a bunch of the old duct work has been removed.
The trusses quickly went into place on the new dormer, and by Sunday afternoon, we had a roof again. We're really impressed with the new look of the house, even though there's still quite a way to go.
But this is where we really get down to changing the look of the house on the outside.

When we checked on the house around noon, the turret and the gable on the right side were still in place, but there was a large opening in the roof where the new trusses would go.

We returned a while later to find the truss company's crane on site and took some video while they lifted plywood, trusses, and a large beam up to the second floor.

However, big news on the upstairs....framing has begun! The wall to the master bedroom is up making the layout in the drawings a little closer to reality. Because the roof is still fairly sloped in area of the master bedroom, and because we've only ever seen it as a gigantic single room, the Master bedroom almost seems a little small.

Standing where the old master bathroom used to be, and looking back at what will be the entrance to the new master bedroom.

The sink and toilet of the master bath will eventually be in this area.

This is the new hallway between the master bedroom and the kids' rooms.

A lot of work has also been done on the back portion of the house; namely the installation of a main support beam along the back of the house that will support the reconstructed roof. New joists have been sistered with the old joists in the main room off the kitchen in the original part of the house. Its pretty reassuring to see how solid this house is going to be after seeing it stripped down to nothing.
The little bit of dam reconstruction that he did after I broke it all up, was all washed away in the heavy rains over the past week. Perhaps he's been called back to the main dam to assist with repairs. We'll let you know if he returns.Keithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08602149877771055459noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8084102542541157058.post-4189109681021996132010-06-07T19:35:00.000-07:002010-06-07T19:35:56.338-07:00Day 26 - We Have Walls AgainThe weather cleared up as predicted today, and the walls went up on the back of the house.
The bulk of the work lately has been foundation improvements, and additions. The clearance in the crawl space toward the back of the house was minimal. You couldn't actually crawl under the back portion at all. That is now fixed. We now have enough room to get in there if needed.

In addition, there are new concrete pads in place, which will provide support for a crossbeam that was very poorly supported before. We'll also have nice level floors, which is desirable to most people.

On the back of the house, forms were put in for the extension foundation yesterday, and today the concrete was poured.
